How to Measure for a Closet Organizer

How to Measure for a Closet Organizer

A well-fitted closet starts with accurate measurements. Grab a tape measure and note three numbers: wall-to-wall width, usable depth from the back wall, and clear height for hanging and shelves.

Width

Measure at the back wall and again at the door opening. Use the narrower number when choosing expandable kits.

Depth

Most hanging rods work best with 12–16 inches of depth. Confirm that doors will still close after shelves are installed.

Height

Double-hang setups often need about 40–42 inches per rod. Long garments need a taller clear span.

Once you have the measurements, compare them to kit specs from brands like ClosetMaid and Rubbermaid before you order.
